I found your car model listed in my usual resources but they are severely lacking in information. There's no listings for engine sensors so I have to guess your car is similar to most others in that it uses a camshaft position sensor and a crankshaft position sensor. Those are the two that provide the signals that tell the computer the engine is rotating. If a mouse chewed through the wires for one of them, typically you'll have no spark, and the fuel pump will not resume running when you start cranking the engine. If you DO have spark, try squirting in some starting fluid to see if the engine runs for a few seconds. If it does, that would suggest the crank and cam sensors are working, and again, the immobilizer is the cause of the no-start. Are you in Australia. I searched on eBay for a service manual. Just puff a small amount in and work the key in and out and turn the key a few times to work it in,repeat if necessary. Note: Never use WD40,CRC or other wet spray lubricants,they will stuff it right up.On the back of the ignition is a contact assembly, the key unlocks and allows the key to travel further and turn the contact assembly. Its much the same as any rotating switch inside, contacts and a arm that turns over them. Point being the key assembly is separate to the switch, the shaft from the key assembly turns the rod driving the switch. I have not opened up a Holden one, however on most other cars ive worked on the whole key assembly can be removed (consult a Holden forum or workshop manual) and the electrical contact switch can be removed and replaced separately. In many cases ive managed to open the contact switches to find the contact points inside burnt, a bit of a sandpaper or file to clean up the contacts, a bit of a bend of the terminal to make a better connection usually worked, if you fail just get another switch, just reuse your old key assembly so you don't need new keys. Knowing how persistent you are and your electronics background, id say you will try fixing it first. One more thing mate.if its your starter motor solenoid that is sticking it will do the same thing. Your ignition switch gives power to the starter solenoid when you turn the key all the way (the part of the end of key travel that's spring loaded), the solenoid then kicks forward at the starter and makes some contacts inside the starter to operate. If the starters solenoid is farked it will behave like a stuffed ignition barrel. In the old days when a starters soliniod was sticking we use to just whack it a few times with a hammer to get the cars started, next time, try giving it a whack, if it always starts after being hit, if say its your starter.
Another check to see if it is your starter is there are 2 terminals going to it, one is the big main positive lead from your battery, the other is a smaller lead, the smaller lead is the one coming from your ignition barrel which fires up your starter. 2 things to look at, throw a multi onto the small lead and see if your getting 12v when someone turns the key all the way like your trying to start it, OR, get a wire, run it from your battery positive to the terminal, it should start the startermotor cranking the engine. Might even be an idea to run a wire from the small starter terminal into the engine bay, when it wont start turn your ignition on, pop the bonnet and just touch the wire on your battery positive will get the engine cranking if it is your ignition switch burnt out inside, basically your doing what your ignition barrel is supposed to be doing, giving the solenoid power just like when your holding the key all the way to start cranking. Next week ill tell you how to hot wire and steal a Commodore, think of all the spare parts you can have for free. The key fob and the BCM (body Control Module) communicate to varify it is the correct key for the vehicle. If the vehicle is unlocked with the remote, it does not need to read the key to start until a predetermined time when the vehicle will passively arm.After it has passively armed,the key will need to be read before it will start. Does it crank over but not start,or does it do nothing at all when you turn the key. There is a red flashing padlock on the dash when the vehicle is locked or it passively arms itself. Is this light flashing still when you try to start.If you unlock the car with the button this light should go out and the key does not have to be read by the key reader to start,unless you are too slow and it passively arms. Most people who have this problem only notice it when starting a vehicle that has been left unlocked,eg sitting in the car with the ignition off while waiting for a mate.
It's very simple for you to see if this is your problem. Just see if the padlock is flashing when trying to start it.If it won't start,turn the ignition off,push the unlock button (even though it is unlocked) and try to start it again. Hope this helps,if not let me know.The spring is in the switch and the switch is a sealed unit,it is not a widespread problem but it does happen. If you remove the steering shroud you can remove the switch,it is held in place with 2 tiny screws which are usually torx or flat head type. Once the switch is out you can turn the key in the barrel to make sure it's not binding at all,then you can put a flat blade screwdriver into the switch to make sure it springs back from the start position. Sometimes the spigot on the end of the barrel that turns the switch is porous from the manufacturing process and can go out of shape before finally breaking,this can also cause the barrel and switch to bind. When the spigot breaks off (usually in the on position) you cannot turn the ignition off. For this reason,the spigot should always be checked when a key isn't returning to the on position after starting.Your problem is either in the key reader circuit in the car,or the contact pin and circuit in the key head. When you turn the key,make sure that the contact is rubbing firmly on the ring.If it's not,try pushing the key into the barrel while turning to see if it makes contact.Does yours have the solid round reader ring or the one with 2 segments. If it's the one with 2 segments these have a locating groove to locate them,but they can sometimes slip around meaning that the key contact doesn't contact when it should. If the key reader ring is all good and making good contact when starting,the problem could be in the key head circuitry or the 2 metal clips that hold the contact pin could be spread apart and not making good contact.(This is inside the key head on the circuit board).
