ELINCHROM STYLE 400BX HEAD BX heads come with multivoltage detection, ideal for those of you who want to take their lights anywhere in the world. The 100 and the 400 both have fast recycling times and flash durations. You are the light of the world. They're working great for my needs which are modest. I had planned on getting an Alien Bees kit, but got a great deal on this kit. One feature that pushed me toward the Elinchroms was the digital control of the output setting rather than the slider adjustment on the Alien Bees.I'm not sure what kind of advice you need. Like Jet Lagged, I have the Style 400BX kit that came with 2 400BX's, 1 white umbrella, 1 silver umbrella, 2 light-stands, 1 carrying case for the stands and umbrellas, and another carrying case for the lights. In addition to the kit, I bought 2 photoFlex LiteDome Q3 soft boxes -- 1 medium and 1 small. I'm an impulse, gotta-have-it-now buyer. And I HAD to have them both that very minute.

I've owned them about a month and am delighted with them, but I have never owned studio lights so I have no real basis for comparison. I was afraid that strobes would be too hard for a beginner to learn, but these are super easy. I attribute much of the ease-of-use to digital photography, though, because you can look to see exactly what your lights are doing, then make adjustments on the fly. The only downsides I've discovered so far are: 1) I shoot with a digital Canon Rebel which does not have a sync cord hole in the camera body. This sync cord hole is how you connect your lights to your camera. Finding a camera shop that knew what I was talking about and had it in stock turned out to be a 3.5 hour endeavor ) 2) The instructions included with the Elinchrom lights are bare bones. I still don't know how to use one of the buttons that controls the modeling light. Kudos to them. (I probably would have bought their Starlights if the shop had them in stock, honestly.) 5) I told the camera store salesman that I wanted to do on-location shoots, and he said these would be appropriate lights for that purpose. So now I'm afraid to take these things anywhere but to homes and offices. 6) The SpeedRings that attach the softboxes to the lights are very hard to attach to the light itself. They don't just slide into place. I feel like I'm forcing them and if I don't force them, they don't sit flat and securely. So, there's a bunch of feedback. Is that anything close to what you were looking for? I'm not sure what kind of advice you need. Hey thanks for the input. No, I dont have specific questions just looking for general feedback or review. The Elinchrom BX400 package seems like a good deal. But my studio is one room, 15x16. I would like to shoot at f16 for certain situations, using my D70. Speaking of the D70. Yes, there is no sync port so I was thinking of a Pocket Wizard? But my studio is one room, 15x16. I would like to shoot at f16 for certain situations, using my D70.

The AB model names aren't the watt-seconds of the units. The AB800s are 320Ws, the AB1600s are 640Ws. By this measure, a 400 BX is more powerful than an AB800, but less powerful than an AB1600. Guide numbers give another basis for comparison. The AB800 has a guide number of 320 with a 50 degree reflector. However their guide numbers are in feet, so this equates to 98 in metres. Another point is that when Elinchrom talk about a 5 stop adjustment range, they're including the end points, so to them, a light that cannot be adjusted at all would have a 1 stop adjustment range. The 400 BXs, therefore, have 1 stop less adjustability than the ABs. This was a reason why I bought 600 RXs instead of the BXs, because they have what Elinchrom call a 6 stop range, i.e. the same as the 5 stop AB range. The 600 RXs seem powerful enough from my fairly brief use so far, but I'm using them on high enough power that I'm glad I didn't get less powerful lights. Regarding location use, I emailed Elinchrom about battery power for their mains units such as the BXs and RXs, and they directed me to this unit, which they said was suitable: You wouldn't want to get dust or water into them through the ventilation holes in the case, of course. Yes, I already purchased a softbox so I guess that diffuses some of my power huh. Maybe I'll pick up one 600 series light and work with a three light setup? Maybe I'll pick up one 600 series light and work with a three light setup.

Yes, if you aren't using softboxes etc, there's no problem getting enough power, in fact if you're pointing the lights directly at something, you're more likely to have the opposite problem and wish you could get them to output less power. The disadvantage of mixing different types of lights is that you have to worry about matching output levels between them, including the modelling lamps. However, it's possible that Elinchrom help with the flash power a bit with their digital system, because the 600 RXs adjust from 1.5 to 6.5 on the flash unit's digital power readout, which struck me as an odd system, but it would make perfect sense if the 400 BXs go from 2 to 6 and they wanted to make it easy to combine different lights. If you were thinking of adding a 600 to a 2 x 400 BX setup, it's probably best to just get the 2 x 400 BXs first, and see how it goes for what you want to shoot. So I decided I'll start with just the two lights and grow from there. Thanks. For me, I gave alot of thought to the Dyna-Lite UNI400JR, because the battery option was appealing, but the Elinchrom won out. Since I shoot much more inside than out, lack of a battery option ended up not being a great concern. Personally, I hate umbrellas so I didn't go with one of the kits. Build quality is excellent, the flash-to-flash output power consistency is great and the color is ultra-consistent. If I shot more outside (and it's fine to use outside), I probably would have gone with the more powerful (and expensive) Style 600RX so I could overpower more ambient light. The 400BX is not a cheap flash at all -- you're just giving up remote computer interfacing and a 6-stop adjustment range in comparison to the more expensive style RX models. A pro flash purchase ultimately is like getting a camera -- you have to look at the system as a whole. Elinchrom has a broad range of light modifiers and consistent output across its whole range, so it can grow with you. For the price, I don't think it can be beat.

The spoiled part is that I'm use to all the remote settings that I was capable of doing with all my 580EX(ii)'s Speedlite's. You know, the setting all power levels at your fingertip's. (E-TTL Auto or Wireless manual) I remember the last time I setup my 400BX on a boom as a hairlight and was annoyed about lowering it, setting it, putting it back up and try again. So I was thinking about maybe trading up one of my 400BX's for a newer BXRi. This would mean getting rid of the CyberSync's and getting Skyport's, not too big a deal. Now I can set it remotely with little hassle.

Granted the WYSIWYG will not be exacting now with the different lights, but I remember reading that can be automatically compensated for with the BXRi's. Than I thought about the whole USB Skyport thing and the cool video's I saw and just the whole remote thing makes me smile a little bit more. So, the above being said, I have a couple questions that I would like to ask some of you. First off, users who have physically held or or own both the 400BX and the BXRi's at the same time. I'm going to assume the whole USB dongle fancy setting thing will work with the BXRi, or is that a bad assumption? Thanks all. -Mario Gear List LIKES 0 The fancier model's are just for speedlite's and in some cases to control AB's or WL's. -Mario Gear List LIKES 0 COOKIES DISCLAIMER: This website uses cookies to improve your user experience. The wireless optical trigger module for the Sekonic is manufactured by Pocket Wizard, and is used to trigger Pocket Wizard receivers ONLY, so it will not work with Elinchrome's Skyport receivers. This option is the least recommended, as the on-camera flash will affect your lighting. Otherwise, you can trigger via the provided PC cable connected to your camera (not possible on the 300D), or wirelessly via a radio trigger of some sort, or an infrared trigger and the built-in optical slave. Elinchrome has an infrared trigger in their product range which works quite well indoors, outdoors there may be problems in bright sunlight. The infrared trigger is quite affordable and really good. There are a number of radio triggers, including (top of the list, but very pricey) Pocket Wizards, Elinchrome Skyport (new, almost as good as PW's, but more affordable and with more limited range), eBay radio triggers (cheap but unreliable). Bowens seems to have radio triggers in their lineup too, but I've got no experience with these. Hope this helps. The vast number of different set-ups is confusing to an amaetuer, but I'm starting to get a handle on it. Everyone raves about the PW's but they're expensive and bulky, I'm starting to lean toward the Elinchrom Skyport's. I was tempted by the PW optional wireless trigger for the Sekonic L358, but I don't think it will be that much of a hassle to unplug the sync cord from the camera transmitter and plug it into the light meter to take a reading. Thanks again guys!Do you have the wireless trigger for your light meter. Are you happy with it?They are expensive, but they work well. Sometimes the PW fails when the meter is attempting to trigger an Elinchrom Beauty Light (while the receiver is behind it) which seems to block the signal. The Elinchrom wireless devices weren't around when I bought the PW's, but I'd definitely consider them today.
