I love the fact that I can view a movie in any of the 7 rooms at my home. It is light enough for me to move and carry without effort. I could not move a flat panel because they are too heavy for me. I did not want to spend the price for a high quality HD flat panel (in the scale of this projector's display) while the prices are coming down and technology is improving. And best of all there is no display screen to dust. Also, I have a wall of windows in the family room and no one will see a large flat panel on my wall and think about breaking in to steal it. It does emit a slight odor but I do not notice it unless I leave the room and come back in. It seems that now after several hours of use there is much less odor. I have a good sense of smell but this odor is not bothering me. It does put out heat which is good in the winter, but I live in AZ so in the summer the heat will not be helpful. The fan humming is noticeable but I forget all about it after a few minutes and it is not annoying at all to me.

I have had to keep the volume level at the highest for all the movies I have played to get the sound level to where I want it. That may be because I am using it in a very large, tall space. I can see that I will need to get my sound system installed if I want more volume. I find it a GREAT bargain at this price. I don't even need the screen, but I will use it if it improves picture quality. It throws a pretty nice picture across to the other wall where I put up the Optomo 84' white matte screen that I bought. Although I don't have enough room to get the largest size screen this thing can throw, I get about 60' on the wall and the picture is pretty darned good with the screen. Against the naked wall it's trash though, so make sure you get a screen. The only cons that I have is that this unit is made strictly for table top use. The projection throws the angle up at almost a 60 degree angle. This was a problem for me, because I wanted to have it sit on a bookshelf and project straight out to the screen, like a movie theater setup. Right now, I have the back-end of the unit propped up with a book and the unit is pointing down toward the ground at a ridiculous angle so that the projection will go straight forward. So if you are looking to ceiling mount or sit it up high on a shelf, it gonna be pretty ugly. But hey, it does the trick for me way out here in the desert. In my case, who cares how it looks as long as it works. Also the remote control layout is pretty lame because the tilt controls are lined up with the volume control so if you accidentally mistake them, you will have the on-screen tilt function sitting there for about 20 seconds. That gets annoying, but other than that this is a great unit.Since then, I've watched a wide variety of movies on it. It's like owning your own movie theater. I'm surprised more people aren't using these things instead of buying big-screen TVs.

The Optoma is light, small, portable, very easy to use, and gives wonderful picture and sound. With this, when you're done with it, you can just put it away. The only fault it has is that (unlike a big TV) you need a darkened room to view the picture. If that isn't a problem, this might be for you. I don't own a movie screen. I project my image onto a white wall. The image I get is about 14 feet wide. With older films, the picture almost stretches from floor to ceiling. Few gadgets have really changed my life, this one has. It has rekindled my love for great movies. I can see details and sense the power in the images that I've missed on TVs.The only thing wrong with the whole product is that abysmal instruction book. The whole writing team must have been on a bender when they cobbled that thing together. Luckily you hardly need it. I bought an inexpensive screen that came in the usual metal housing. I stripped the housing off, and hung the screen itself on a nail, upside down, from the pull-down handle.Since I use the Optoma so often, that works for me. An alternate to foamcore is a sheet of white styrene. This stuff is inexpensive and available from your Sign Supplies store. It has a transluscency that pops the colors nicely. Since the price has dropped so dramatically on this one, it gives even more value. It has a built-in top-loading DVD player into which you can insert a DVD and start enjoying a movie in a matter of seconds. With the high-throw-ratio lens, you can position the projector close to the wall or screen without sacrificing image size or quality. Add to this a set of crisp-sounding internal speakers and you have yourself an exceptional projector. It is light, bright, portable, and produces a great image, comparable to Optoma's H31 or other high quality 480p projectors. With the integrated DVD player, wiring is kept to a minimum, and the projector can be packed away in its included carrying case when not in use.

If you are interested in portable, part time home theater in a living room or family room, the MovieTime DV10 offers a complete package that eliminates the hassles of cable clutter and connections.Easy to setup, easy to move to a different location, and image quality comparable to virtually any other entry level projector, and better than many, it should gain a huge following.A single cable (digital optical) will send the DVD's sound to your big systemTurns any space into a home theater instantly. Just plug in, point it at the wall and presto. The Optoma DV10 on the other hand is very affordable and offers an image that rivals most of others in its class. As far as the image quality goes we are very impressed. It features an incredible 4000:1 contrast ratio allowing for good reproduction of dark shades and good strong blacks. The DV10 also features an amazing 7 segment colour wheel running at 4X speed ensuring awesome colour reproduction and eliminating the chance of seeing the rainbow effect visible in older model DLP projectors. Whilst the DV10 includes a DVD player inbuilt and ready to go, its worth a mention that it still includes all the inputs that a normal projector has.The rear is filled with an abundance of connections so you can plug in anything from a set top box to a computer. The speakers can also be bypassed allowing connection to a high end home theatre system via Optical or SPDIF. Designed to connect any source with component level RGB outputs to projectors, TVs or other display devices. Similar projects offer better audio quality or a brighter picture, but the MovieTime delivers a complete portable cinema package for a good price. On the top of the projector, backlit control buttons encircle the DVD player's hinged lid. A VGA input for PC use also doubles as a component video input when used with the supplied dongle. We were mildly disappointed to find the slightly recessed s-video input was incompatible with the oversized interconnects of our Monster cables, but standard jacks worked fine. We were pleased that the projector's integrated controls mimicked the functionality of the remote so as not to render the device useless in case the remote is misplaced.Compared with the 4:3 aspect ratio of other entry-level projectors, the DV10's 16:9 aspect ratio is a better match for movies and reduces the amount of pixels that go unused when trying to map widescreen content to a non-widescreen display.Digital keystone correction (vertical only) is provided to square up the projected image. Loud enough to fill a medium sized room, we noticed no distortions even at maximum volume. For improved quality, analog and digital audio outputs are available for use with a home stereo setup. The DV10's very quiet cooling fan also contributed to the perceived sound quality. In addition to being quiet, the DV10's exhaust was directed up and to the side, making it relatively safe for use on sensitive surfaces (such as finished wood). Film-based DVDs were handled properly, minimizing potential moire artifacts. Noise reduction was the DV10's weakness, with little or no enhancement noticed. The DV10's light output wasn't as bright as the HP ep9010 or the Cinego D-1000, but subjectively speaking, we felt the DV10 produced the most appealing image.

Optoma's inclusion of such useful extras as a protective storage bag for easy transportation helped make the DV10 a solid value for those who want an instant movie theater anywhere there's an outlet and a blank wall and earns our nod as an Editors' Choice. Optoma MovieTime DV10 Projector Specifications They are nicely laid out, and easy to understand. The Image 1 menu also has the usual Projector Brightness, Contrast, Color (saturation), Tint, and Sharpness settings. The Degamma control lets you lighten up the middle brightness values, without affecting the extremely dark and extremely light areas. The toggle for Image AI is also there, along with the Reset control. You will note that the default settings for these will vary depending on which Image mode you select (Cinema, Vivid, ImageAI, etc.

) This is a very nice feature that, when watching DVD’s, can be very handy, in terms of placing the projector, and screen location. With Image Shift, you can move the used portion of the DVD, up or down, instead of the black bars at top and bottom, you could move the image down even with the bottom of the screen (or up with the top of the screen). I like this feature. And have used it previously to watch movies when I evaluated the Optoma H27. (I should have shown some images showing its use to make its operation more obvious, but didn’t think of it when shooting, my apologies.) The layout is logical, and the button shapes are different separating types of features. I have a remote for my Marantz THX receiver, and after a year of using it, I still have to turn on its backlite to figure out where some things are, and it has about the same number of buttons! Use it once and you know where it is. Press once for on, twice for off.It didn’t take long to memorize the fact that the two on the left were down and up, and the two on the right, left and right. Keystone and Volume are verticals, with Display, Subtitle and Auto sync in between. Really Well done. Lacking the light is still a negative (Occasional users might get frustrated without it, but overall, its a good remote. The only problem is that projectors are visual devices, so you’ll need to connect a video source and a set of speakers. Unless you plan on running permanent AV cables behind your walls, finding the right lengths of cable that span from your projector, which is generally placed in the middle of the room, to your DVD player and audio components can be a real fuss. All you need is an Optoma MoveTime DV10, a power outlet and a bit of blank wall (although a projector screen will give you the best results). The MovieTime has an integrated DVD player and speakers so it can operate without the need for external devices. For displaying video VGA, S-Video and composite connectors are included. This means that while the MovieTime does support high definition TV modes, such as 576p, 720p or 1080i, it doesn’t have the physical pixels needed to create the extra detail. Colours are brilliant, and the 1000 ANSI lumens lamp is bright enough to be seen in shady daytime conditions. Pull the curtains closed during the day and you?ll see plenty on screen. The only trouble we had was finding something the right height to rest the projector on to get the image where we wanted it. Also, the MoveTime has a fairly short throw, or minimum distance needed between it and the wall, which is between 1.5 and 4 metres. This is especially handy for small spaces, and it can produce an image stretching out from one metre in diagonal to a whopping 2.93 metres. Still, it’s easy to run audio to a set of amplified speakers or surround sound system. It’s also handy to take to a friend’s for a big-screen games session, or for an impromptu outdoor cinema night. While you can get high-definition projectors for a similar price, the bonus is the all-in-one home cinema capability. Does not support true (native) high definition. It's possible to hook up an HD set-top box, videogame console or even a PC through the component-video adaptor and RGB port. There's also a standard S-Video and basic composite connection. The integrated DVD player supports several video and audio formats including VCD, SVCD, HDCD as well as MP3, WMA, KodakPhotoCD and JPEG playback. When playing audio files, Optoma has provided an onscreen interface to select different files but don't expect much volume from the built-in 5-watt speakers. We suspect many users will hook up a 5.1 speaker set for DD and DTS surround sound. Further, replacement bulbs can be difficult to find and are often expensive. In the case of the DV10's bulb, which has an ANSI brightness rating of 1000 lumens, expect an average lifespan of roughly 3000 hours when run in economy mode. Both the Movie mode and Image AI settings display excellent images but even these can be improved. This meant that the projector had to be placed quite low to the ground to accommodate our test screen. When we placed the DV10 roughly three metres away from the screen, the projected image was just under 100 inches across the diagonal. Once you have the correct placement, it's time to play around with the image settings. Unfortunately, this process is made difficult by the unnecessarily complicated menu system. Pictures were vivid and clear, plus dark scenes came out superbly once the brightness levels were toned down. However, we did have some quibbles. Lower resolution images didn't fare so well when displayed up on the 100 inch screen. Finally, the built-in speakers were loud enough to fill a small room but deteriorated in quality when the volume was turned up. Let's round up some of its best movies.
