First some history - I originally had a 224x-ds and it was quite good. Now I have another 224x-ds, and I do have to say.I have a dbx 228 that I use in my bedroom rig. I always have thought Type II dbx in all the years of there units were the same.Yeah, maybe we can do a temp trade and see if the difference is there. Have to look inside 'em both tho.No doubt you know what a dbx tape sounds like when played non decoded. How about this test I did: Doubting my 53 year old ears.Because of there age they heard the term dbx but had no clue what it was for or about. The DS is im my main rig in the cave and the X is in the living room Also got the 3BX DS and 3bx series 2. The DS is a series III. I had that back in the mid to late 70's right through the 80s. Wish I still had it. You see how much they go for now? Then turn the top (Record) thumb knob -- a small coin will work as well as your thumb -- until the tirst yellow (0) LED lights up on moderately loud passages and the last red LED lights up rarely. This sets the output of the encoder to optimize its dynamic range The third row will be governed by the output of your tape deck, which in turn is governed both by how hot you record (which you dont want to alter merely to get a nice light show) and by any output-level control the deck has.
http://www.zstelc.eu/content/file/fanuc-6t-manual.xml

If it does have such a control, just tape whatever music you're listening to and set the output level until the third row s 0 LED lights whenever the one right above it does. If your deck doesn't have an output- level control, don't worry -most decks are unity-gain (level-matched) within a couple of dB, depending on tape sensitivity etc. Again, turn it to line up its first yellow LED with the one in the top row. Now you're all set: your noise-reduction system and tape deck are level-matched from input to output As we have mentioned, none of this level-setting needs to be absolutely precise.Level-matching does, however, make for a neater display, and it means that the loudness of your music won't change as you select among various sources, dbx and others. You hardly realize how much tape hiss youtve been putting up with until it's eliminated. We are equipment re-sellers, not professional technicians. Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ. When it looked like it was all coming to an end, I got rid of everything and bought a 21 decoder just so I could play my DBX LP's. At the time, I had an Audio Research SP9. I sold that early this century and moved up to an SP16. The SP16 was a great preamp, but it didn't have a monitor loop. For the past eight years I've been unable to play the DBX LP's. A short while ago, I bought an Audio Research PH5 in anticipation of moving to a line stage preamp. I now have an LS25, and have sold the SP16. Finally, a preamp with a tape monitor loop. The noise floor is so low, and the dynamic range so wide that the sound is really something. Yes, I know, electronic processing in the signal path must be bad, but you know something. You really have to hear it to appreciate it. I only have 14 DBX titles, and I'm recording them as I play them. But hey, maybe I'll start looking around for other titles that people don't want because they can't play them. Anyways, it was definitely a blast from the past, and one that I really didn't expect to sound so impressive.AudiophileIt may sound schmaltzy to say this, but I sometimes miss talking about this old stuff. Dman Analog Junkie I wouldn't be able to listen to the decode signal, but I would have been able to record. But none of that matters. What does matter is the sound. Oh well, don't get rid of your decoder. Who knows, maybe a few years from now they'll all be looking for DBX and SQ4 LP's! Thanks for your comments.

AudiophileCan't remember how many, but it might have been something like 20. I got rid of them because I didn't think they sounded natural or as good as audiophile LPs. They certainly had no groove noise, but they just didn't sound right to me. I was once heavily into DBX. I owned two DBX 4BX dynamic range expanders and also a couple of 224's for recording and playback. I even bought a Teac X-1000R reel-to-reel with DBX noise reduction. However, the DBX system in the tape recorder caused a bump in the bass response that I found annoying so I made most of my reel-to-reel tapes without any noise reduction. Eventually, I sold all the DBX gear because I just didn't think it sounded good. I tried making cassette tapes using DBX 224 noise reduction units, but I found that on some of my recordings the noise floor would breathe, so to speak. Dolby C seemed to sound much more natural. It would be fun to hear DBX again, though. Good luck, John ElisonAudiophileI have sometimes wondered what it would sound like with good quality coupling caps and a healthy recap of the PS. When DBX discs perform well there is little to nothing that can compare. EdLife is analog.digital is just samples thereof AudiophileRecently, 'Synchronicity' sounded forced on the 122 and was better with the (lesser) model 21. -reub Dark energy? Ridiculous! We live in an electric universe. AudiophileGotta be all those crappy electrolytic caps in the signal path. Heck, it'll be a good comparison. Dman Analog Junkie AudiophileAdd to that the fact that the power supply caps are probably not so hot after all those years (my own 224X dates back to 1984-5-ish, so its due for an update as well.)! Do you have a service manual. Dman Analog Junkie AudiophileThe 224x has a tape loop with a monitor selector built in. Sorry I can't be more specific on your unit. Dman Analog Junkie AudiophileAs a result I have not been in too much a hurry. EdLife is analog.

digital is just samples thereof AudiophileThey are a result of the tape wrap contact area on the curvature of the head. At low frequencies, the actual tape contact area tends to simulate a head gap causing a ripple effect in frequency response at low frequencies. If I remember correctly, these are called head bumps. The hyperbolic heads of the Teac X-1000R emphasized this undesirable effect and the DBX noise reduction system seemed to make it even worse. I always preferred the cylindrical heads of Revox and Studer tape recorders to the hyperbolic heads on Japanese tape recorders because they minimized the head bump phenomenon. They sometimes had more dropouts, but they also had a much flatter frequency response in the bass region. Best regards, John ElisonAudiophileI have heard a 224x sound incredible- of course all the electrolytic caps (in the signal path) were removed and replaced with film types. Much better! Dman Analog Junkie. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. As I live in Australia our power supply here is 240V 50Hz. Most of the DBX units I see for sale are US machines running on 120V 60Hz. Do any of you know if the DBX units are dependent in any way on the power line frequency. I could not see any evidence of switches anywhere on the units for a frequency selection. Cheers.I could not see any evidence of switches anywhere on the units for a frequency selection. Click to expand. This seems to be an even later version of the 224X. It would seem to have lost the DBX Disc function, and gained a second tape loop.

Does anyone know of any other differences between the 224X and 224X-DS other than those functional changes. I have read some posts elsewhere that suggested that the 'DS' in the name suggested 'Digital Series', but that can't be right can it. The DBX units are all true analog are they not? Cheers.Contrary to one of the comments in this thread that indicated the DS is digital, a quick review of the service manual for it and some checks of the ICs used in its circuits show that the audio processing in it is fully analog.Contrary to one of the comments in this thread that indicated the DS is digital, a quick review of the service manual for it and some checks of the ICs used in its circuits show that the audio processing in it is fully analog. They can be found on eBay of course. The 3BX III is a rack mount unit, not sure but I suspect that some DJ's with pro systems use them to fatten up or sweeten analog sources. LarryIIRC the MTS difference signal is dbx encoded and all MTS tuners in TV's, VCR's, DVD Recorders, etc, would have to have decoders built in. The difference signal is what carries the stereo information and is the first place noise is usually manifested. We've all probably noticed noise when listening to distant fm signals in stereo which usually can be reduced by switching to mono. That is noise in the difference signal. It is for this reason that dbx was decided upon for lowering the noise in the TV MTS difference signal only.I would like to pick up a 3BX III though.
