Detailed information about a significant service overhaul, I'd probably get from one of the on-line DIY subscription databases.Every time I need it, the book says to take it to a qualified service technician.What I received was a Haynes manual for a 1993-2000 Ford Ranger. Mine is a 2004 with the 4.0 SOHC. The Ford Ranger did not have the SOHC until 2001 so this book has no information that is useful to me. Don't be sending people something different than what you list. At this time, Ford released the truck as an early 1983 model. It was introduced in response to an influx of Japanese pickup trucks flooding the American market at the time. The Ford Ranger was the successor to the Ford Courier, and the first model was only a two-wheel drive. However, a four-wheeled drive version of the Ford Ranger was released in the autumn of 1982. The Ford Ranger was designed using inspiration from other truck models by Ford. Ford Rangers were manufactured with similar grille designs as trucks within the Ford F-Series, which are predecessors to the Ford Ranger. The Ford Ranger had two models in the beginning: a 108-inch wheelbase with a 6-ft bed and a 114-inch wheelbase with a 7-ft bed. You can identify a Ford Ranger 5-speed transmission by learning how to spot the two transmission models used in the stock truck. Step 1 Look under the transmission at the bottom pan (where the transmission screen is) and count the number of bolts attached to the pan. A 12-bolt pattern is typical of the original Mitsubishi and Mazda transmissions made for the Ford Ranger. Step 2 Measure the extension housing. This is the portion of the transmission located past the bell housing and center part of the transmission.
It is much narrower then the rest of the transmission unit and should measure 10 inches. Step 3 Locate the ID tag. Both the Mitsubishi and Mazda transmission units have a metal ID tag attached to the left side of the bell housing that is stamped with the Ford part number of the 5-speed transmission for your Ranger. On the Mitsubishi unit the ID tag will be made of red metal; on the Mazda unit the ID tag will be silver in color. Step 4 Identify the style of bell housing. Both types of transmission units have a closed bell housing on all-wheel-drive (AWD) models only. The bell housing on 2WD vehicles will be a half-style (not fully enclosed). All the above identifiers will be present on an original 5-speed Ford Ranger transmission. Any transmission that is missing one of these identifiers is not considered to be original. Tip A 5-speed transmission will have six gears (including reverse). Don't be confused by the difference in terms between the number of forward gears and the overall number of gears. Signs to Change Your Transmission Fluid There are several signs you can look for to know when your transmission fluid needs to be changed. Many of these signs come from your gears acting oddly, or not working at all, in the worst-case scenario. The first telltale sign to change your transmission fluid is if your transmission is slipping between gears. Also, if you have rough or erratic gear shifts, this is a result of low transmission fluid, as well. Additionally, if your gear shifts are slow or delayed, or just don't shift at all, this is a big red flag that you'll need to change your transmission fluid, too. To avoid any of these situations, it's important to check your Ford's transmission fluid periodically. You can do this by pulling the transmission fluid dipstick (usually marked ATF) and checking that it's at the right fluid level. You can also check where your car was parked for any dark red or almost brown stains that signify a leak. When to Change Transmission Fluid It's recommended to get your transmission fluid changed once every 30,000 to 60,000 miles-or, once every two to four years. However, this is just the suggestion for the average driver. There are other factors that may require you to change your transmission fluid more often, say every 15,000 miles or so.

When determining a leak, the first thing that you have to do is determine what is leaking. If there is a spot or puddle of fluid under the truck, examine what is in the puddle. If there is not a puddle, there might be drips hanging from the transmission, a bolt or a line. It could be water, motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid or gear oil if you have a 4x4. The water will just look like dirty water. If it is motor oil it will feel thick and sticky and is usually black. The brake fluid is almost clear and has a thin consistency. The transmission fluid, when new, is red. It will have a red tint to it. It is not as thick and motor oil, but not as thin as the brake fluid. The gear oil is brown when new. Its consistency is between the transmission fluid and the motor oil. It will feel thicker than the transmission fluid but not as sticky as the motor oil.Look for the highest wet place on the transmission.If it is brake fluid a drip will probably be hanging on the lowest point on the bell housing, where the engine and transmission bolt together. Brake fluid could also be hanging from the hose that runs into the side of the transmission on the driver’s side towards the front of the transmission. If this is the case, then the slave cylinder is bad and the whole transmission will have to come out and the slave cylinder will have to be replaced.
If the clutch has a lot of miles on it, this would be a good time to replace the clutch also.Again look for the highest point on the transmission that is leaking. A few places that could leak are: the output shaft seal, the speed odometer, or the front input shaft seal. Any of these can leak, but one that is hard to catch is the shift rail plugs. These are 3 little plugs that go in the back of the top of the transmission. These little black rubber plugs will not leak much at a time, but leak just enough to keep the back of the transmission wet. A lot of times it will look like the speed odometer or rear output shaft is leaking.Most people who change their own oil would be able to replace these themselves.A pair of pliers may also work to pull the plugs out.
